A Perth man has been found guilty of murdering his wife despite arguing that he was affected by a mental illness and the medication used to treat it. Dimitros Tsakiris stabbed his wife Corinne at least 20 times at their Booragoon home in March 2008. The couple's 14 month-old daughter was in the house at the time. Tsakiris maintained he was only guilty of the lesser charge of manslaughter because he didn't intend to harm his wife.

The flight attendants union yesterday lashed out at Fair Work Australia, accusing the tribunal of largely ignoring representations by Deputy Prime Minister Julia Gillard to consider changes to the new award covering airline cabin crew.

ONE of China's biggest government-owned companies yesterday repudiated mining billionaire Clive Palmer for overstating what he said was Australia's biggest export "contract" to supply coal to China from a new Queensland mine. China Power International Holding's senior vice-president instead described the agreement as a "framework agreement", forcing Mr Palmer into desperate damage control as he flew back to Australia from China.

A SURVIVOR of Victoria's Black Saturday bushfires has told a royal commission that conservation laws were so strict in her shire that it was illegal to clear away debris on her own property, such as a limb fallen from a tree. Toni-anne Collins, who lost her 40ha property in Ninks Road, St Andrews, told the Teague royal commission that clearing native vegetation on her property was totally prohibited under rural conservation and environmental regulations.

GREECE's budget problems are not just a worry for this small economy at the periphery of the European Union. It is an acute embarrassment to European elites that pushed through monetary union for political reasons. If they had only listened to economic advice they would have spared their countries a costly economic adventure. George Bernard Shaw once said if all the world's economists were laid end to end, they would never reach a conclusion.

ABC managing director Mark Scott has described as "absolutely ludicrous" suggestions the corporation buckled under pressure from China not to broadcast a controversial Australian documentary about Uighur leader Rebiya Kadeer. But Mr Scott's claim that the film The 10 Conditions of Love was never "locked in" for screening appeared at odds with an ABC email sent to its producer, John Lewis, apologising for shelving the original broadcast date of December 17.

IN its most brutally merciless performance of the summer, a clinical Australia has systematically dismantled a barely competitive West Indies outfit in front of a record low crowd in Adelaide. The attendance of 8378 - the lowest for an Adelaide game involving Australia - will fuel the burgeoning calls to kill off one-day cricket and replace it with more Twenty20 matches. As gloomy as the crowd figure was, it could not dull Australia's dominant performance last night.

Waugh has played No 8 in the Waratahs' pre-season trials against the Reds and the Brumbies and trained exclusively in the position at scrum-time in an opposed training session in Sydney yesterday. Wallabies No 8 Wycliff Palu moved to the side of the scrum to accommodate Waugh.
